Yahtzee is a game of both luck and strategy. While you can't control what you roll, you can maximize your expected score by making smart decisions about which dice to keep and which category to score in.

Priority Order for Categories

Yahtzee (50 points) - If you have 4 of a kind, always go for the Yahtzee. The 50-point payoff is worth the risk.
Large Straight (40 points) - High fixed value with reasonable probability. Prioritize when you have 4 sequential dice.

To reach 63 points, you need an average of 3 of each number:

Ones: Target 3 (3×1)
Twos: Target 6 (3×2)
Threes: Target 9 (3×3)
Fours: Target 12 (3×4)
Fives: Target 15 (3×5)
Sixes: Target 18 (3×6)

💡 Pro Tip

If you score above target on high numbers (5s and 6s), you can afford to score below target on low numbers. Four 6s (24 points) gives you 6 extra points to spare!

🎲 Dice Keeping Decisions

🎯 Four of a Kind

Keep all matching dice and re-roll the rest. Always go for Yahtzee when you have 4 of a kind - the potential 50 points is worth it.

📈 Three of a Kind

Decide based on the number: high numbers (5,6) - keep for upper section or full house. Low numbers - consider going for Yahtzee.

🔢 Four Sequential

With 1-2-3-4 or 2-3-4-5 or 3-4-5-6, always go for the large straight. Re-roll the odd die for a 1/3 chance of 40 points.

Sometimes the best strategy is to sacrifice a category. Here's when to consider it:

Ones category: Best category to sacrifice - maximum loss is only 5 points.
Early game Yahtzee: If you haven't filled Yahtzee and roll garbage, take a zero there rather than waste a valuable category.
Protect the bonus: Never sacrifice upper section categories if you're on track for the 63-point bonus.

💡 Zero Strategy

Plan your zeros early. If you think you might need to zero a category, do it early when you might still get lucky and fill it properly later... wait, that doesn't work in Yahtzee! Once you zero, it's permanent. Choose wisely!
